Welcome
The Speciality Chemicals Sector was formed in 1995 and aims to highlight industrial advances in speciality and performance chemicals. This is achieved primarily by the organisation of international conferences on emerging or rapidly changing areas of chemistry and technology relevant to both its industrial and academic members. The sector liaises with other groups and sectors both within and outside the society on these conferences. These co-sponsors include BACS, SCI, RSC Applied Materials Chemistry Group, EOSCA (the European Oilfield Speciality Chemicals Association), InsightFaraday partnership (now known as the Chemistry Innovation Knowledge Transfer Network (CIKTN)) and dmg world media to name but a few.
Conferences topics in addition to recent conferences given further down the page have included: Pilot Plants and Scale-up of Chemical Processes; Novel Technologies e.g. High Throughput Experimentation, Process Intensification; Waterborne Coatings and Additives; Total Quality Management; Corrosion Inhibitors; Radiation Curing; Detergents; Clays; Chemicals for the Electronics Industry; Pigments; Textile & Paper Chemicals; Catalysts; Elements of Success e.g. derivatives of phosphorus, fluorine, silicon & nitrogen; Controlled Release and Contract Manufacturing.
We also promote chemistry through supporting talks and demonstrations in primary and secondary schools, the support of science weeks and science fairs, science web sites, events staged by local sections, and activities for schools run by external organizations such as the Catalyst Science Discovery Centre.
The Speciality Chemicals Sector has about 250 members who receive the annual sector newsletter, which contains information on future events as well as reports on past activities and other items of interest.
Mission Statement
The aim of the Speciality Chemicals Sector is to promote the interests of all its members in speciality and performance chemicals and to promote the development, application and use of these chemicals.
Our conference programme includes the following regular symposia:-
RSC Speciality Chemicals Sector Symposium
This annual 2 day conference (formerly called the Chemsource Symposium) is run in partnership with dmg who organize the Chemsource exhibition, and is held in conjunction with Chemspec Europe. Over the last few years the conference has been held in Amsterdam, Geneva, and Dusseldorf. In 2008 it is to be held in Munich.
Chemistry in the Oil Industry Symposium
Chemistry in the Oil Industry is a 2 day symposium and exhibition which takes place every 2 years. Since 2001 it has been organized in partnership with the European Oilfield Speciality Chemicals Association (EOSCA). Symposium number ‘XI’ is currently in preparation for 2009. In November 2007 some 190 delegates attended Chemistry in the Oil Industry X which included a Job Fair as well as an exhibition.
Other symposia and conferences organised over the last few years include:
|
Reactive Dyes, a celebration of 50 years of innovation'
|
|
'Industrial Applications of Surfactants V'
|
|
'Faster Routes to Speciality Chemicals II'
|

Royal Society of Chemistry Speciality Chemicals Symposium: The Sustainability Challenge
The 2008 Royal Society of Chemistry Speciality Chemicals Symposium will highlight the approaches being taken by the industry in response to environmental concerns and long-term sustainability. The Symposium will be held in conjunction with the Chemspec Europe and Chemsource Exhibitions organised by dmg world media to be held in Munich, Germany on 18th and 19th June 2008 which will attract a broad range of visitors from across the fine and speciality chemicals industry.
The Main themes are:-
* Speciality Chemicals from Renewable Raw Materials (RRMs)
* Sustainable Manufacturing Processes
* Reducing Environmental Impact

FRT09: Fire Retardant Technologies 2009
The Speciality Chemicals and Applied Materials Chemistry Groups of the Royal Society of Chemistry are organising this two day international symposium.
Fire Retardants are a multi-billion pound industry providing protection to people and property in all walks of life and particularly in areas such as mass transport, furnishings, construction, electrical equipment and electronics.
Different fire retardant strategies have evolved from halogen flame retardants to metal hydroxides and more modern char forming and intumescent fire retardants. More recently phosphorus based materials and nanocomposites have shown potential to reduce the flammability whilst addressing environmental concerns.
